The commercial fishing tug, Evelyn S. was built in 1939 by Sturgeon Bay Boat Works for William Sellman, of Manistique, Michigan. The vessel is 50' long with a 13' beam and is constructed primarily from white oak. The hull is sheathed in iron for protection from ice. She is equipped with a 75 -- 90 HP three cylinder Kahlenberg engine, a type commonly used on fish tugs and working vessels of that era.
The repair and preservation of Evelyn S. is possible thanks to a generous gift from John and Cyndi Woollam. Visitors are able to board this historic Great Lakes fish tug to get a glimpse of the life of a fisherman. Authentic equipment, clothing, and tools are on display. Visitors also have a view of the unique Kahlenberg diesel engine that powered her across Lake Michigan. |
