Friends Good Will
requires annual rigging, de-rigging, regular maintenance, and an
active and trained crew. Those necessary tasks and vital services
will be provided by member volunteers enrolled in the Ship’s
Company.
Captain's Log
- A very successful first season for Friends Good Will. By mid-July, she was operating from the Museum's newly-constructed dock adjacent to the Boat Shed. Hundreds of volunteer hours were clocked by Ship's Company members, especially, her loyal crew.
- Now we have begun the process of preparing our Sloop for the winter weather. The topmast and yards were struck and the associated rigging inspected and stored inside. The downrigging process is complete and the boat is covered.
- The topsail yard has been rigged in the Boat Shed to train crew interested in going aloft as part of the crew training program that will begin at the start of the new year.
- This winter we will be finishing the interior of the vessel; this will include period cabinetry, lighting, and a display of cargo in the main hold that will give the vessel the look and feel of the orginal ship. Saturday morning and Wednesday evening will be the primary work periods for volunteers, and there will also be many small detail projects that Ship's Company members will be able to sign up for that will enable them to come in as time permits.
Policy and Training Manuals for the Ship’s Company are already
written. Application to be included within the Ship’s Company
can be made to the Museum Executive Director, Barbara Kreuzer, by
electronic or regular mail. As with most aspects of life, enthusiasm,
dedication, and available time will be considered far more important
than sailing experience. Provisions have been made for the novice
and for the member where distance from South Haven will limit the
time available. Do not let inexperience or distance deter you from
becoming involved! To become a member of the Friends Good Will Ship’s
Company, download
the Volunteer Application and
Disclosure Form.
