The Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve (SWMUP) is now part of a statewide program to protect shipwrecks by installing mooring buoys. These wonderful examples of our Great Lakes history have been damaged in the past by haphazard boat anchoring practices. It is the belief of the State archaeologists office that installing Coast Guard approved mooring buoys at 186 shipwrecks around the state will help protect them from anchoring damage and provide a more safe access for scuba divers. Come hear Kevin Ailes, President of the Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve and Vice President of the Michigan Underwater Preserve Council speak about this important program.
